Rothbury is the quieter end of the wine country. Hermitage Road runs through it, The Vintage sits on its western side, and the vines start where the paddocks stop, which is why so many couples book the whole weekend here rather than driving up on the day. I have been working Hunter Valley mornings for years and this stretch is a favourite: the light through a villa window at seven in the morning, the whole party in one house, and a ceremony down the road rather than over the hill.

Everything I do in Rothbury is mobile. I arrive at the accommodation with the full professional kit, set up in the room with the best window, and work the party through in an order built around your ceremony time rather than around mine. Villas and resort suites are the usual setting here, and they are good ones, but I have worked in farmhouse kitchens and on verandahs too. All I need is a bench, a power point and somewhere to put a mirror.

Yes, The Vintage is one of the properties I know best in this part of the valley. Parties there are usually spread across a villa or two, and that suits me: I set up in whichever one has the best light and work the group through in a running order that has everyone finished before the photographer wants you outside.
We are staying at a villa in Rothbury for the weekend. Can you come to us?
That is how most Rothbury weddings run and it is the easiest version of the morning. I bring the full kit to the accommodation, work in the room you are already in, and nobody has to drive on a vineyard road in a dress. Send me the property name and the ceremony time when you enquire.
How does a trial work if we are coming up from Sydney?
Trials are held at my Cameron Park studio and are $150 each. Most couples coming from out of the area pair the trial with a valley visit they were already making, for a venue walkthrough or a tasting, so it costs a morning rather than a separate trip. Book it a couple of months out and bring a photograph of the dress if you have one.
What holds up best in the valley heat?
Airbrush foundation, and it is included either way rather than charged as an upgrade. Hunter Valley ceremonies are often outdoors in the afternoon with no shade to speak of, so I build the skin to sit rather than slide, set it properly, and use waterproof formulas around the eyes. Hair goes up or gets pinned with the wind in mind.
